LANGUAGEÂ THERAPY
Increasing Comprehension and Expression
Comprehension and Expression develop the moment a person is born. These skills are automatic responses to the world happening around them. From eye contact, to smiling at a familiar face, these skills are acquired daily through interactions. Receptive and expressive language skills are typically acquired around the same age for every child. However, when there is a delay, this is when it is recommended to seek professional help by a speech language pathologist, as they are the only professional who can diagnose receptive and expressive language disorders.
COMPREHENSIONÂ AND EXPRESSIVE LANGUAGE
AUDITORY COMPREHENSION
Refers to the understanding of concepts of the world around an individual. This can include identifying objects, family members, following commands, performing actions, and comprehending what is being spoken. Receptive Language disorders typically present mixed with Expressive language disorder. Speech therapy can help with developing these skills.
EXPRESSIVE COMMUNICATION
Refers to what an individual can say or communicate to others. This includes naming objects, combining words to make phrases, expressing feeling or needs, and overall getting a message across to a listener. Expressive Language disorders can develop alone or in combination with receptive language disorder. Speech therapy can help with developing these skills simultaneously.
